The Wetsuit and the Sea… An Epic Fail. Or is it?

I think I set myself up to fail. Figuratively shot myself in the foot. And how? I boldly proclaimed at the end of my last blog that I was going to get into my wetsuit and into the sea. Oh how foolish was that? I announced to the world that I was going to get into the cold sea and swim. Fail. Fail. Fail.  I have a healthy loathing for the cold and in particular cold water so why did I even imagine that I could force myself to do something I really didn’t want to? Because I really do want to and something in me believes that I can!

How often do we set ourselves up to fail and then promptly beat ourselves up with a big stick? This is perhaps one of our worst faults. Perhaps what we should be doing is set the goal and write down our reasons for that goal. A goal is meaningless without a meaningful reason or reasons.

Why do I want to dip myself, however gingerly, into the cold ocean?

  • Cold water swimming is good for mental as well as physical health.

  • I just want to be brave and do it.

  • Overcome irrational fears that everyone will stare at me waddling in my wetsuit to get in the water.

  • Freedom!.

My reasons may seem ordinary and perhaps not the most exciting to some, but to me they make sense and give me a purpose. I have no time frame for this maniacal plan, but there’s a part of me that has penciled the ‘sell by’ date as 31 December. I just haven’t said which year! I am also not planning to feel guilty that my time scale is flexible.

What goals have you pushed aside, felt guilty or ashamed that you haven’t achieved? Rather than feeling negative or anxious, ask yourself why you want to achieve the goal. Knowing why, gives impetus to do. I know my ‘why’. I now need to implement the plan.

The Plan

Step 1: Wriggle into the wetsuit

Step 2: Drive to the beach

Step 3: Stride into the water

Don’t overthink. Achieve.
